Prof. K.C.Kar, Founder of CITP

Welcome to our Website

Calcutta Institute of Theoretical Physics (formerly known as ”Institute of Theoretical Physics”), was established in 1953 by Professor Kulesh Chandra Kar, an internationally recognized theoretical Physicist and eminent teacher of Presidency College, Kolkata as a forum where discussion and meetings on new and emerging topics in Physics and Applied Mathematics could take place which would lead to new insights and research on contemporary topics. The institute is situated at 4/1, Mohan Bagan Lane, Kolkata -700 004.The house, at which the institute is situated was a dwelling house of Prof. K.C. Kar. This organization could start with generous donations of Prof. Kar, Founder Director of CITP, all of his belongings (movable and immovable properties); along with the copyright of his five published text books in Physics. With these donations, a Public Trust was created on 7th October, 1967. Serving the scientific community all these years, the institute has been recognized as a National Institute. His motto was always to inspire young talents to devote whole heartedly in higher studies and research.

As the academic world became more and more professional and knowledge more and more specialized, organizations which started as individual enterprises found it difficult to keep up. However, we feel that institutions such as these can play an important role in the dissemination of knowledge if one can bring about some changes which can allow them to interface better with today’s society.

We want to significantly broaden the scope of the organization and are in the process of creating a website of the institute . We encourage the physics and mathematics teachers of various colleges and institutes in the state as well as their Ph D students and Post-Doctoral Associates to put up their contributions in the form of their lecture notes/slides/comments etc. It is our firm belief that these contributions will be immensely beneficial to both students and practitioners of the physical sciences.

Since 1953 a quarterly (peer-reviewed or refereed) Journal named “Indian Journal of Theoretical Physics ISSN: 0019 - 5693)” is being regularly published by the institute, which has earned international recognition for the last seven decades.

This institute also organizes four memorial lectures every year which address some issues in contemporary physics and applied mathematics in a university student friendly format.

An appeal

The Calcutta Institute of Theoretical Physics ( formerly known as “Institute of Theoretical Physics” ) was established in 1953 by Prof Kulesh Chandra Kar ( Presidency College, Calcutta ) as a forum where discussion and meetings on new and emerging topics in physics could take place which would lead to new insights and research on contemporary topics. As the academic world became more and more professional and knowledge more and more specialized, organizations that started as individual enterprises found it difficult to keep up. However, we feel that institutions such as these can play an important role in the dissemination of knowledge if one can bring about some changes which can allow them to interface better with today’s society.

Currently, the institute has the following primary functions:

  1. Publish a journal named “ Indian Journal of Theoretical Physics “
  2. Hold four memorial lectures every year which address some issues in contemporary physics in a university student-friendly format
...

We want to significantly broaden the scope of the organization and are in the process of creating a website of the institute. We encourage the physics teachers of various colleges and institutes in the state as well as their Ph.D. students and Post- Doctoral Associates to put up their lecture notes/slides/ comments etc. [ covering different aspects of physics –old and new- since without the old there can be no new ] on our website. It is our firm belief that these contributions will be immensely beneficial to both students and practitioners of the physical sciences.

This appeal is being sent to you so that you can

  1. Contribute to our endeavor to disseminate knowledge by posting articles on our website on any issue that you find interesting
  2. Pass on this information to people you know
  • Become a life- member of the institute and encourage others you know to do so ( this involves a modest sum by today’s standards [ Rs 2000/- ] and will obviously be beneficial to the institute )

Initiatives

In today’s society, educators and researchers have realized that the study of the basic science is facing a crisis . The primary reason for this is the availability of better job prospects and opportunities in engineering , technology and professional fields. Many talented students drift to these areas because of attractive careers. This is a global trend and has become a serious cause of concern in both the developed and developing countries.
